On tonight’s Downton Abbey, a bazaar hit the grounds of the estate, and Robert made a triumphant and surprise return.

Our Downton Abbey season 4, episode 7 recap breaks down the events of the episode!

Update: Read our recap of the episode!

Love is in the air. Molesley and Baxter have a nice discussion downstairs about moving up in the world, but she’s primarily interested in learning more info about what happened to Mr. and Mrs. Bates. Molesley and Baxter continue to hit it off through the duration of the episode, and when Thomas asks Baxter if she learned anything new while he’s been away, she’s uninterested in speaking to him. In this episode we saw Baxter’s change of heart, and we’re thrilled to see Thomas is being put in his place.

The problem is eliminated. Anna comes clean to Lady Mary about Lord Gillingham’s servant Mr. Green, and admits to her that he’s the rapist. This shocks Mary, but Anna reminds her that no one can know it was him so that Mr. Bates doesn’t go and do something to him. The reason for the revelation to Lady Mary is that Green is coming with Gillingham to Downton yet again.

Gillingham and Green arrive shortly thereafter. Downstairs, Anna sits across from Green, and Bates asks where he lives in York. Upstairs, Gillingham is trying to impress Mary but can’t beat the pig farm ordeal last episode. He reveals he’s called off his engagement, and tells Mary he’s very interested in her. She insists she still needs time before moving on from Matthew. Gillingham leaves the following day, but not before Mary asks how he feels about his valet. He doesn’t like him.

Goodbye, Alfred. After a written marriage proposal to Ivy, Alfred visits town due to the death of his father. With the passing of dad and his mom moving out of town, our favorite redhead reveals he won’t be coming back again. Ivy turns his proposal down, and when Alfred turns to Daisy, she insists she no longer loves him.

The end of a taboo relationship. While out on the town, Tom notices Rose and Jack on a lunch date. Later, Tom is walking with Isobel and bumps into Ms. Bunting, who they get into a bit of a tense discussion with concerning politics. Tom then goes to Mary to tell her about Rose and Jack’s date. Mary talks to Rose about her decision, and she says that she loves Jack. “I’m going to marry him,” and she insists she won’t stop because of what anyone else says. Proving her seriousness, she gets engaged.

Lady Mary plans a trip to London with Anna, and the latter relays this news to Bates. He proceeds to ask Carson for the same day off so that he can go into York. Look out, Green!

What’s the reason behind Mary’s visit to London? She’s going to talk to Jack face to face, and she asks that they not marry. She doesn’t need to plead to Jack, however, because he says he wasn’t planning on doing it. His reasons? He doesn’t want to spoil her life.

More business to tend to. The situation with Jack and Rose is not the only thing Mary decides to take care of. She tells Anna she’s decided to meet with Gillingham and ask him to remove Green. She promises she won’t tell him what the reason is.

A plan for the baby. Edith announces a trip to France where she plans to leave the baby. Always inquisitive, Violet catches onto Edith’s secret because of A) Rosamund’s presence, B) Their decision to go to France, and C) some words used to describe Edith. Violet asks them to come clean at her home, then offers to pay for all the costs involving Edith’s baby.

A party turns sour. Mr. and Mrs. Bates later reconvene at Downton just in time for the bazaar, and Carson reveals the Mr.’s visit to York. Anna asks what he was up to, to which Bates replies, “this and that.”

Gillingham comes to the bazaar and reveals to Mary that Green suddenly died after falling into the street and being hit. She then relays this info to Anna, who is relieved to hear that it happened with lots of people around to witness, but she doesn’t reveal to Mary that Bates was in town the same day.

In happier news, Robert returns to Downton after his trip from America as the event is happening.

Also in this episode, Charles asks Mary if she’d like to take things more seriously, but she insists not – just like she did with Gillingham. Both men want to put up a fight for her, and both seem like they’re going to fail for a while longer.

The Downton Abbey season 4 finale airs Sunday, February 23 at 9 p.m. eastern/pacific on PBS.
