Lords and ladies of America, your time has come! Downton Abbey season 4 premieres tonight on PBS and will pick up the pieces following the tragic season 3 finale.

Set six months after the Christmas Special during which Matthew was killed in a car accident, tonight’s Downton Abbey on PBS is expected to draw in a huge audience as great word of mouth about the show grows. The season 4 premiere in the United Kingdom drew in 9.5 million viewers – a new series record.

The synopsis for Downton Abbey season 4, episode 1 reads, “Following Matthew’s untimely death, new mother Mary is struggling to come to terms with her loss. Robert and Violet disagree on how to bring her through it. Downstairs, hearts are set to be broken as Jimmy finally takes an interest in Ivy. Carson has an unwelcome reminder of his past while Mrs Hughes sees an opportunity to help grief stricken Isobel. Thomas is up to his old tricks and has the children’s Nanny in his sights.”

A clip from tonight’s season 4 premiere shows that Lady Mary is still in a dark place following the death of Matthew and refuses to even interact with their child.
