Downton Abbey is getting a movie, but can we expect a sequel film? According to the film’s creators, it is totally a possibility.

Downton Abbey isn’t a show that, on paper anyway, you’d think would have a huge, devoted fanbase around the world. The show is dialogue- and character-driven rather than action- and special effects-driven, so in a time where big franchises are king, you’d think Downton Abbey wouldn’t find viewers. But it totally does.

Though the television series is finished, Downton Abbey is headed to the big screen in a major motion picture, picking up just over a year after the series finale. And while we’re so excited to return to the adventures of one of our favorite households, fans can’t help but wonder if this will be the final chapter.

In an interview with Variety, writer Julian Fellowes said that a sequel is totally a possibility. If, that is, fan response to the first film is positive — especially at the box office. Fellowes said a sequel “entirely depends on reception of this film.”

Gareth Neame, producer for the film, agreed with Fellowes, telling Variety, “I’m optimistic that, because it used to be such a water-cooler TV show, people will want to go and see the movie in theaters. Hopefully there will be an appetite to do more. It’s all down to how much the fans take to it. I think there is appetite from me and Julian [Fellowes] and, I’ve heard, from the cast.”

So it seems that this doesn’t have to be our final trip to Downton Abbey! While we’re all incredibly excited about the prospect of further films, it is good to hear that the cast and crew are reserving official sequel talk until they see how fans respond to the first film. We love that the Downton team doesn’t want to overstay their welcome or do anything to tarnish fan affection.

We will have to see how fans respond to the first Downton Abbey movie. Happily, we won’t have to wait too long for that film to open in theaters. The film will open in theaters on September 20, so get excited!
