A NBC executive has revealed that the long-rumored Downton Abbey movie is in development and could film next year.

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes has already said that he’s very interested in creating a movie to send the characters off into the sunset, and now the production wheels appear to be spinning. A Downton movie — or three-ish episodes worth of new material in one theater ticket — will film in 2018.

Michael Edelstein, president at NBCUniversal International Studios said at the opening of the Downton Abbey Exhibit in Singapore yesterday, “We are working on getting the script right, and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the [cast] together. … But we’re hopeful to make a movie sometime next year.”

One would assume it wouldn’t take too long to film and release a movie. Without the need for special effects, and the fact that the cast and crew are already very familiar with each other, a production could get up and running very quickly. Would it be so crazy to think we could see the movie released by Christmas next year?

Season 6 of the British series was the show’s last. It ended in early 2016 after it aired on PBS.
