In a first for the hit British drama, Downton Abbey is rumored to be casting a black character in the upcoming fourth season.

The roaring 20’s may bring a new element of social change to light in season four of Downton Abbey. According to The Sun, ITV’s soapy drama is casting the character of Jack Ross, a talented musician and singer who, as a black man, will help personify the social changes of the time beyond the standard rising hemlines and recreational tobacco.

In casting notes sent out to agents, Ross is described as “Male, 25-30… He’s black and very handsome. A real man (not a boy) with charm and charisma.” Ross’s position as a musician will be an integral part of the character, as the casting pages note that the actor should “ideally be able to sing brilliantly” – could Jack Ross first find his way to Downton in the capacity of a musician? Or might he perhaps be “discovered” by now regular character Lady Rose, who has a demonstrated affinity for modern music?

Either way, Jack Ross is set to make a strong impact on the world of Downton Abbey; the casting notes conclude, “Overall, he should be a very attractive man with a certain wow factor.” Though we’re certainly fond of our regular Downton cast, there’s no denying it will be nice to see a fresh, exciting face bring a little “wow” to Yorkshire.

In other casting news, the role of Lady Mary’s new love interest, Lord Anthony Gillingham, has not yet been filled. Actor Tom Ellis was rumored to have been cast, though the buzz proved hollow when he joined the cast of ABC’s new pilot Gothica. Downton Abbey is also apparently searching for a “Sir John Bullock” who “must be able to act drunk.” We think he sounds like a total catch.

What do you think of the new faces joining ‘Downton Abbey’?
