The second series of critically acclaimed period drama Downton Abbey had its American première on Sunday – and was received well by both critics and audiences.

The series opener, which aired on PBS, racked up an impressive 4.2 Million viewers – double the average prime time ratings for the channel.  The British drama, penned by Julian Fellowes, also saw a viewing figures increase of 18 per cent on the first series.

Critical reception has also been overwhelmingly positive.  The New York Daily News predicted that it may come on to be “the best show of 2012.”  While other critics weren’t quite so dramatic about their praises, it holds an impressive score of 85 on Metacritic.
