George Miller is currently slaying the box office with Mad Max: Fury Road, but what about his never-completed take on Justice League?

DC Comics’ Justice League series is coming to the big screen in 2017, directed by Zack Snyder and bringing together all the biggest DC movie stars — Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ben Affleck (Batman) and Jason Momoa (Aquaman).

But back before superhero movies were all the rage in Hollywood, Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller (whose spangled filmography also includes Happy Feet and Babe) was actually planning another Justice League movie.

DC was developing the movie back in 2007, with a planned release date of 2009; years before Marvel in earnest began working on The Avengers.

The project, which was to be filmed in Australia, was eventually abandoned for budget reasons, and from complications due to the 2007-08 Writers’ Strike.

Now, the full story will be told in Miller’s Justice League Mortal (working title), a documentary seeking to give, “an unbiased account of the project’s development, preproduction and cancellation, as well as the impact on the Australian film industry.”

The news comes from IF Australia, which further reports that the documentary team has not yet received the go-ahead from Miller and his working partner Doug Mitchell.

If the documentary is greenlit, it will be directed by Ryan Unicomb and produced by Aaron Cater and Steven Caldwell.

The movie will chronicle the the “fascinating story” behind the Justice League movie that might have been, through cast and crew interviews, and with never-before-seen concept art and costumes.
