It looks like there is some very strong circumstantial evidence to suggest that the 12th Doctor is going to be Welsh. The question is – who?

UPDATE: The 12th Doctor has been revealed! Learn who it is.

We have to thank two of our more astute readers, matthewhpg and Esmeblabbed, for pointing this one out. It looks like the BBC once again has forgotten basic Internet protocols and left a placeholder URL for the world to see. They really ought to invest more in IT.

Though there is no text available as of yet on this entry the URL’s tile is pretty telling http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho/articles/Welsh-Hero-is-the-Twelveth-Doctor

So who exactly is this Welsh hero?

Clue number one is via U.K. photographer Rankin who tweeted earlier today about shooting the next Doctor.

Among those who Rankin has recently followed on Twitter is Welsh actor Aneurin Barnard. Aa of this writing he is 13 down on Rankin’s list and the only recent Welshman.

Clue number two is Aneurin Barnard’s recent Twitter follows. The most recent of which is Doctor Who Online, the BBC press office and the Doctor Who casting director. The last two follows were done in the last hour. Up until now he has had no overt Doctor Who interest on his timeline.

Clue number three would be Aneurin Barnard’s most recent role which is rather hero-like in nature. In the White Queen he plays the Duke of Gloucester

Clue number four would be this exchange between Bernard and his Italian fansite on Twitter.

In case you are wondering how to pronounce his name. He cleared that one up on Twitter just a few days ago.

If you are wondering why he looks familiar, he was in the TV special We’ll Take Manhattan that co-starred Amy Pond, A.K.A. Karen Gillan.

Now, by no means are we saying this is a done deal, but the evidence is starting to stack up. Back in June, Hypable’s own Selina Wilken wrote a piece about Welsh actors who could be the next Doctor. If it’s not Aneurin Barnard, maybe Alexander Vlahos, Ioan Gruffuud, or Rhys Ifans?
