It seems like a million tie-in products are coming out this year for Doctor Who. The latest is a PlayStation Home hub that will allow players to see all of the nooks and crannies of the Tardis.

You can hardly blame the BBC with the 50th anniversary looming in November. Licensing new products means big bucks and exposure. The larger question is whether Whovians are going to want to continue their Doctor Who love on this platform.

For those that don’t know, PlayStation Home is Sony’s social network for the PlayStation 3. Players walk around as avatars, chatting with anyone who might be walking around the same hub as them. Amongst many other hubs, Doctor Who joins the larger network of PlayStation home. In the Doctor Who hub, players can expect to play Who themed mini-games, text-chat with fellow Whovians, and dress up as their some of their favorite Doctor Who characters.

In looking at the newly released specs, the hub appears to concentrate on the Matt Smith version of the Doctor that players can then customize. It seems a bit of an odd choice that with 50 years of history, only one Doctor is offered as the base model. It hardly reaches out to the long-time fanbase, many of whom cut their gaming teeth on Pong and Space Invaders, and might like to play around with the ever popular Tom Baker version of the Doctor.

There are some really cool features, such as an interactive YouTube component. As described by the PlayStation blog:

No Doctor Who experience would be complete without the iconic TARDIS which will be available as both a private estate and clubhouse where you can join your fellow Whovians and explore the wonders of the TARDIS. This expansive private space and clubhouse is unlike anything Home fans have seen before and comes equipped with a LOOT Active Camera so you and your friends can capture your adventures and seamlessly upload them to your YouTube account.

There’s a certain magic to Doctor Who that isn’t all about who has the sonic screwdriver and who’s piloting the TARDIS. It’s the storyline, the interpersonal relationships between the Doctor and companion, and how this ties in within the framework of the space and time travel. The question is, will this magic transfer to this platform, should it, or does it not even matter?

The Doctor Who PlayStation Home hub will be available tomorrow, March 27.

Are you a Whovian and gamer? How does this PlayStation Home hub appeal to you?
