The BBC has released a minute-long trailer for Doctor Who series 9, and it’s chock-full of monsters!

Update (August 23): BBC America released a second shorter trailer, this time running at 30 seconds. While a lot of the footage is the same there’s some new glimpses into the aliens and Maisie Williams:

Original story (August 12): Doctor Who series 9 is looking pretty amazing if this trailer is any indication. Not only does it look and feel like one huge, epic movie, but it also gives us a ton of great looks into the monsters we’ll be seeing. In the one minute of footage you see Daleks, Zygons, and not one, but at least three additional beings/aliens we haven’t seen before – including one that looks like it hails from Pan’s Labyrinth.

Oh, and of course there’s Maisie Williams! We can’t wait to see what her character will have in store for the Doctor. Whatever it is, we’re sure it’s going to be a role worth Williams’ star power.

Who’s missing, unsurprisingly, is David Tennant. Earlier this week we reported that Tennant and ex-showrunner Russell T. Davies were back in Cardiff, the filming location for Doctor Who. Many suspect their presence has to do with the fact that Peter Capaldi was already in an episode of Doctor Who before he became the Doctor, and Moffat plans to explain that connection this season. While we absolutely did not expect Tennant to make an appearance in this trailer, you can’t blame us for wishing!

Doctor Who series 9 premieres September 19, but if you can’t wait that long to get your Whovian fix then you can catch the series 8 finale on the big screen this September, accompanied by a special season 9 prequel scene to quench your thirst for the Twelfth Doctor.
