Doctor Who is slated for a historical episode tonight. It’s the Doctor and Clara meeting Robin Hood, sort of.

Doctor Who episodes tend to fall into three categories: One, the Doctor takes on an alien problem in the present day U.K. Two, the Doctor travels to a far-off world to tackle an alien threat. Or Three, the Doctor goes back in time and encounters a famous historical figure. Tonight, it’s a back in time historical to meet the legendary Robin Hood. The question is, does he really exist, or is he just a figure of legend?

The BBC has certainly gone out of their way to recreate a classic Robin Hood scene where Robin splits an arrow in a tournament disguised as a peasant. The scene is almost verbatim out of the 1938 classic The Adventures of Robin Hood staring Errol Flynn, Oliva De Havilland, and Basil Rathborne.

Writer Mark Gatiss spoke to EW about his inspiration for the episode, “Ah, well, it’s the Doctor meets Robin Hood. That’s the most straightforward pitch there’s ever been, really! Steven (Moffat, Doctor Who executive producer) said to me, ‘Would you do Robin Hood?’ And I thought, ‘Yes!’ I’ve always been a huge fan of the Errol Flynn film (1938’s Michael Curtiz-directed The Adventures of Robin Hood), one of the greatest films I think ever made. But I’ve never been much of a fan of any TV series. I think it’s a film idea. I think it runs out of steam in a series. So the idea of doing a kind of potted version for Doctor Who seemed ideal, really.”

In this next video, it’s clear that Clara is definitely a Robin Hood fan, but the Doctor is not convinced. In true Doctor fashion, he takes on Robin Hood but doesn’t use the weapon you might think.

Lastly, in case the Doctor thought Robin Hood was only capable of splitting the arrow once, it’s obvious, much to the Doctor’s dismay, that Robin and do it whenever he wants, and at will.

Robin Hood is played by Tom Riley who is best known for his work in the Da Vinci’s Daemons over on the Starz Network playing none other than Da Vinci himself. Riley jumped at the chance to play the iconic part. He tweeted out his enthusiasm earlier this morning.

Doctor Who airs tonight at 9:00 p.m. on BBC America.
