Doctor Who’s season 9 trailer just debuted at San Diego Comic-Con. The Doctor, Clara, Missy, and a new character played by Maisie Williams are featured.

In keeping with tradition, Doctor Who debuted their season 9 trailer at San Diego Comic-Con. In the past, there has been about a 4-week lag between the trailer’s debut at Comic-Con and its official appearance online. Luckily the plan was much different this year!

The trailer kicks off with imagery of The Doctor, Clara and Missy. There are lots of intense faces and lots of running and explosions in various locations.

As for those locations, most seem to be off earth. One was definitely a space station.

Aliens in the Doctor Who season 9 trailer include some familiar ones such as a Zygon who was holding a screaming child hostage as explosions went off. Additionally, the arm of supposedly a newborn Cyberman is seen rising from the ground.

There are absolutely new aliens and threats in this trailer. A three-headed humanoid with almost a Star Wars look is featured. There are also creatures in both Victorian and modern dress who have dark pits where their eyes should be.

Clara is seen several times in orange spacesuits that we have seen throughout the reboot era. There were no scenes that were obviously of her at the Coal Hill School.

One whimsical moment in an otherwise intense trailer is of the Doctor playing air guitar followed by the Doctor donning what looked like iconic Risky Business sunglasses.

There are several great quotes in the new trailer including the Doctor saying, “I am the Doctor and I save people.”

There is also this: “Evil, it’s astonishing, and I want to kiss it to death.”

Guest star Maisie Williams (Arya of Game of Thrones fame), seems to be in a space suit similar to those we’ve seen before. Her unnamed character cheekily says to the Doctor, “What took you so long old man?” after revealing her previously hidden face. Multiple fans in our seating area began speculating that she might be a young Clara helped by a bit of good old wibbly wobbly.
