Earlier this month the BBC announced that Eoin Colfer would be penning the first of the Doctor Who “eshorts,” 5,000 word short stories featuring each of the eleven Doctors. Now it looks like Colfer is combining two loves.

Colfer stated to BBC4 radio:

One of my favourite children’s books of all time is Peter Pan, and I thought it might be a nice idea to somehow blend Peter Pan and Doctor Who together. That’s why I did my story set in Victorian London in 1900 and the doctor kind of bumps into JM Barrie. If you’re a Peter Pan fan you might get the references, I hope.

If you would like to listen to the four-minute interview, you can do so here on BBC4.

This will not be the first time that the Doctor meets an author. In the reboot era alone, the Doctor has encountered Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and Agatha Christie. In the classic era, the Doctor encountered H.G. Wells, Jane Austen, Noel Coward, and Lord Byron just to name a few.

Colfer also revealed that each eshort author has to keep their story under 5,000 words, and that he could have written far more given the opportunity. His eshort features the first Doctor and his granddaughter, Susan, before they come to Earth in the 1963 and meet up with Susan’s teachers and later companions Barbara and Ian.

Subsequent eshort authors will be announced each month, and their stories will release the 23rd of each month leading up to the November 23 anniversary of Doctor Who.
