Geronimo! As we gear up for Friday’s prequel and trailer of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, the BBC have released the first official still of the Doctor – new costume and all!

As part of the BBC’S annual charity telethon Children In Need, a special two minute prequel to the yuletide episode will air on BBC One throughout Britain this Friday evening. Later that night, fans will be treated to the first full trailer – and presumably the long-awaited title.

After Amy and Rory bowed out in the series 7 part 1 finale “The Angels Take Manhattan”, the Doctor will meet new companion Clara (played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, who appeared as the seemingly linked Oswin Oswald in “Asylum of the Daleks”) in a Victorian themed episode starring Richard E. Grant as the adventure’s mysterious villain.

To whet our appetites for Friday’s footage feast, the BBC have released the first official image from the prequel. In the picture, we see the Doctor has got himself a new outfit after the loss of the Pond’s. While the bow-tie is still present, it’s otherwise all change as Eleven dons dark colours and furry collars in a costume oddly reminiscent of the time period he’ll be visiting…

There’s a brilliant new prequel to the Christmas Special starring Matt Smith as the Time Lord and featuring a number of familiar faces… If you need any more incentive to tune in we’ll just add that it was written by Steven Moffat!

Aside from that, there’s a new, exclusive preview trailer of the Christmas Special that includes the first glimpse of the Doctor with his new companion… Both items will be on BBC One on Friday, 16 November and will be available to view online soon after their Children in Need premiere.

The Christmas special will air (unsurprisingly) on Christmas day in both Britian and the United States, with BBC America following its recent trend of broadcasting new episodes on the same day as their British premiere.

What do you think of the new outfit? Is it too dark? Too different?
