Doctor Who couldn’t possibly be back without a battle with the arch-nemesis of Time Lords, the Daleks, as these new images reveal.

The official synopsis of series 8, episode 2, “Into the Dalek,” reads, “A Dalek fleet surrounds a lone rebel ship, and only the Doctor can help them now… With the Doctor facing his greatest enemy, he needs Clara by his side. Confronted with a decision that could change the Daleks forever, he is forced to examine his conscience. Will he find the answer to the question, “am I a good man?” Written by Phil Ford (Torchwood) and Steven Moffat (Sherlock), and directed by Ben Wheatley (Kill List). The episode introduces Samuel Anderson (History Boys) as Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School, where Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) also teaches. Into the Dalek premieres Saturday, September 1 at 9:00pm ET.”

The Daleks have faced every Doctor since they were first established in the classic era. They are easily his most dangerous and scary foe. Clara has seen the Daleks before as both herself and as Oswin as part of the Impossible Girl story arc.

This time out, it does not seem that the Daleks are attacking the earth of the present. They are instead attacking some sort of space station that is likely from the future. It is unknown if it is the citizens of the earth of the future facing the Daleks, or citizens of another world.

Although Samuel Anderson will be making his debut this episode as Danny Pink, Clara’s teaching colleague at the Coal Hill School, it isn’t clear if he will be seen in flashbacks of Clara’s life at the school, or if he will accompany the Doctor and Clara in their travels.

Clearly the BBC is hoping the Daleks are once again a huge hit, especially since the episode airs during Labor Day weekend. The premiere of series 8 set a record, and the BBC would love to capitalize again this week. According to their press release, “The U.S. embraced award winning actor Peter Capaldi’s first full episode as the Doctor, delivering 2.58 million total viewers Live+SD Cume*. From 8:00-10:00pm, Doctor Who ranked as the #1 program in all of cable among total viewers and A25-54. BBC AMERICA was the #1 network and Doctor Who was the #1 show in all of television on Twitter and Tumblr for the day. Over 1 million total viewers Live+SD Cume* tuned in for BBC AMERICA’s new eight part paranormal thriller, Intruders, which helped deliver BBC AMERICA its highest rated Saturday night ever.”

Doctor Who airs on Saturday on BBC America at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.
