With less than 24 hours to go before the announcement of the 12th Doctor on Doctor Who, Twitter is burning up. But how much is real and how much is trolling?

Update: The 12th Doctor has been revealed! Welcome, Peter Capaldi.

Actor Misha Collins, who most will recognize for his role on Supernatural, is known for his sense of humor and playing with fandom. In fact, each year at Comic-Con, while on his morning jog, he typically runs by the fans who slept out on the streets. So, it should come as no surprise that the fandom savvy Collins decided to have a little fun today.

Now, since Collins isn’t British, Irish, Welsh, or Scottish, his chances of being the next Doctor are right on par with my chances of having Bennedict Cumberbatch ring me up and invite me for tea. On the other hand, it’s not beyond impossible that he might have a role in an upcoming episode, as American actors (or at least actors who sound like they are American) are needed from time to time.

Now, despite the fact that the online betting parlours stopped taking bets on Rory Kinnear and Peter Capaldi, they likely have no inside track. What’s more likely is that they are just trying to cover the house’s assets just in case. It’s a lot more about making a profit than making a real claim of knowledge. Especially in the case of Capaldi, who previously appeared not one but two in the Doctor Who universe stories. These predictions of “it is almost certainly person X” aren’t written in stone.

Next up is the Daniel Rigby rumor mill. Rigby’s name has been bandied around for about two months, along with a pack of half-a-dozen other 30-40 something actors as a possible 12th Doctor.

Up until today, we would have said his chances were equal to any in the pack, as well as a few others. This was until Bleeding Cool News announced that they’ve stumbled onto something that is a major clue.

Rigby has been performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Except, the show is oddly off the schedule for tomorrow as Bleeding Cool points out: “He is appearing in Holes by Tom Basden as well, which would have started tomorrow at 18.30. Except that sitting does indeed appear to have been cancelled. Is this a smoking gun? Also, there are still tickets available for the show on Friday-Sunday for the next three weeks.”

You can clearly see what Bleeding Cool is talking about in the graphic to the left that is a screen capture of the show’s performances. As they rightly state, this might be the “smoking gun” that everyone is looking for.

Does Bleeding Cool have it right? They were debunked when they ran with a story declaring a stash of lost videos were found. The only sure thing is that by this time tomorrow we’ll know.
