After a two-year absence, Doctor Who returned on Sunday to Comic-Con to promote the Christmas Special, and it’s the last time Moffat and company will be repping.

Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss, Pearl Mackie, Michelle Gomez and Matt Lucas were all on hand to promote the Christmas Special and talk about season 10. Here’s our minute-by-minute breakdown of the event:

‘Doctor Who’ at SDCC ’17 live blog

2:00: The crowd is buzzing while we wait for the last Moffat-era Doctor Who panel.

2:08: Brand new trailer for the Christmas Special, and they just finished filming three days ago!

2:09: Bill was introduced at the end of the trailer, which means yes: She will be back!

2:12: Steven Moffat knew he wanted David Bradley to play William Hartnell at New York Comic Con, it was an idea someone threw out and he was like, “…oh yeah!”

2:15: Pearl was not prepared for how powerful the Doctor Who fandom was. “It’s wicked, thanks for having me!”

2:16: The Christmas Special will be Pearl’s last appearance in the show. Or so they say!

2:17: Matt Lucas was cheered on when introduced, and stayed in character. “It’s great being here, Earth is one of my favorite planets.”

2:18: When discussing Nardole, Lucas said he began as very broad. He thought he was just doing a cameo, and evolved the character as the show went on.

2:19: Michelle Gomez was talking about Missy, saying “it was interesting trying to be good and seeing how it feels. It was really hard looking at Peter’s great eyes, wanting to be his friend. It’s hard to act with this man and not want to be your best self.”

2:21: Chris Hardwick, moderator, asked Gatiss how it’s been for him now that it’s ending. “It’s interesting, there’s a melancholy to it. [The Christmas Special] is a fantastic episode, and we had a great time doing it. It was a lovely way out. It’s a great Christmasy episode.”

2:24 Hardwick mentioned how well the show does getting you to like each Doctor. “It’s kind of like you are the Doctor, making all these attachments and having to let go.” We agree!

2:25: When discussing Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor, Moffat wanted to clear things up. “There’s a lot of press about backlash but there is absolutely no backlash. Jodie has an 80% approval rating, and everyone who is writing anything else needs to shut up.”

2:30 They showed a goodbye video with all of Capaldi’s best moments, and Hall H gave him a standing ovation. Excuse us while we type through our tears.

2:31: “I’ve never got a standing ovation before,” Capaldi said. He stood up and and proceeded to praise every one on stage, giving them each their own moment to shine.

2:34: Hardwick asked of Capaldi, “As a fan how would you describe your Doctor?” Capaldi responded, “I love him. He’s the most handsome, haha. I love him, and he’s an alien but I don’t know what kind of creature he is. He’s perceived to be a human but is darker and wittier.”

2:36 “What kind of advice would you give anyone playing the Doctor in the future?” Hardwick asked. “Get a lot of sleep,” Capaldi responded.

2:37: Hardwick asked what the Doctor’s name is, since people keep referring him as Doctor Who and people feel that’s correct. Moffat clarified for the first time, “His name is the Doctor! If you enjoy continuity, and a lot of you do, you’ll realize this!”

2:39 The first fan question was an adorable teenage boy who started to tear up. Excuse us, typing through tears again. His question? “Every Doctor has an iconic moment, so what do you consider your iconic moment?” Capaldi responded with the shot of his eyebrows right at the start of the show. Ha!

2:41: The next fan question: “What part of the Doctor do you always have to include when writing him?” Gatiss responded, “There’s a huge amount of legacy to draw on. Overall there’s a basic kindness, but a very crooked path to get there.” Moffat added, “What he can’t bare, though, is people suffering. He is the passerby who becomes the last man standing in every situation of terror he passes. He’s not trying to be that but he is.” Gatiss finished, saying “Maybe this is why the show is called this, but Doctor is the best name for him.”

2:43 Before her question a fan thanked the cast for every emotion they put her through. So much emotion! She asked if the line “the star is made from lemon drops,” was a reference to Dr. Doolittle. Moffat responded, “The line is the sky is made of lemon drops, get it right!” he joked. And no, it was not a reference because he had no idea about that line.

2:49 “Is there a moment you had that could have been better?” A fan asks of Capaldi. He responds, “We do the best we can with the time given to us and there are things that could have been better but we don’t know that exactly, I’m just happy I didn’t get the sack.” Pearl adds, “I don’t think you could have been better, Peter.” Agreed!

2:52 A fan asked if any of the cast had ideas for monsters. Gomez said “rubber gloves that attack,” and Lucas said “I want a monster that makes every man gay. Specifically aged 22-28.” Same, Lucas. Same.

2:54 Hardwick asked Moffat, “Is there anything you haven’t gotten to do?” He said there’s loads more to do, but he’s done everything he wanted to.

2:56 A fan asked what everyone’s favorite scene was, and Capaldi said it was the scene where he did karate. It was also Gomez’ favorite scene, and Lucas said “It was the scene where I got to say, ‘There’s a rescue ship on the way!'” He’s never been in anything where he had to say something like that.

2:58: The best fan question of all, a 5 year old girl who asked “Me?” when Hardwick asked her name. She got all shy and had to talk to her mom, dressed as a pink troll, to ask the panel the hardest moment of the show.

Capaldi responded, “Every day has its hardship. One of the most difficult things to do is acting against the monsters that aren’t there and knowing how scary that monster is supposed to be.”

3:00: The last fan question was a girl who said she wrote a Missy spinoff, and asked if we’ll get to see that actually happen. Gomez responded, “Thank God I get to work again!”

And that’s a wrap! The cast got another standing ovation, and everyone is crying. Now, where are the tissues?!
