Caroline John, who played the Third Doctor’s first companion Liz Shaw in Doctor Who, has passed away at the age of 71.

John first appeared as Elizabeth “Liz” Shaw in 1970, continuing in the role until 1974 and returning for 1983’s “The Five Doctors” and 1993’s “Dimensions In Time.” Liz was a scientist, and one of the few companions to be treated as an intellectual equal by The Doctor because she understood a lot of his “technobabble.”

The actress was born in York, United Kingdom, during the second World War and passed away on June 5. John’s family confirmed her death after holding a private funeral for her in London.

It is said that the star’s character inspired the name of Prometheus protagonist Dr. Elizabeth Shaw, as director Ridley Scott is a huge Doctor Who fan and has in the past spoken enthusiastically about the prospect of working on the show.

Below are Caroline John’s first and last scenes in Doctor Who.

Rest in peace, Caroline.
