Doctor Who hits the Wild West in a new batch of promotional pictures for episode three of series 7.

“A Town Called Mercy” is the show’s first foray into the Western genre since it was revived back in 2005, and only the second Western story in Doctor Who‘s long and rich history (“The Gunfighters” featured First Doctor William Hartnell and aired in 1966). Like many of the most popular cowboy movies, 7×03 is in fact filmed in Spain, marking the second time this series that the show was shot in the country – the exterior snowy mountains in “Asylum of the Daleks” were also shot in the typically sunny country.

“A tale of war, betrayal and vengeance, converging on one small town in the Old West – a town under siege. Just crossing the boundary line summons a not-quite-human killer from the desert haze. The Doctor finds himself not just in the crossfire of an ancient conflict (a cyborg killer and an alien fugitive) but faced with a moral dilemma. Which side should he take? Who really is the victim here?”

If you missed the wealth of images and stills for this Saturday’s “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship,” which were released earlier this week, you can check them out here.

What do you think of the images? Are you optimistic or skeptical at the potential for a Western-themed Doctor Who story?.
