Tilda Swinton confirms she will be joining actor Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel’s film adaptation of Doctor Strange as The Ancient One.

Swinton was reportedly in talks to join the film back in May, but now the actress has revealed that the talks are over, and that she’s set to play The Ancient One. Read her full comment about the film below.

“We’re so far in talks that we’re not talking any more [laughs]. It’s done. I just really liked the premise of this and the idea of playing this character. I’m a Marvel fan and I think this particular world that Doctor Strange goes into is really, really, really exciting. I’m really interested as both an actor and a fan to see what’s done in this particular world.”

She also said that the studio is planning on breaking the mold with Doctor Strange, and this would be the perfect movie to do it with. With so much talent it would be easy to bring a different type of audience to this film.

The actress said about the changes, “It’s all about creativity. It’s not about everything exploding at the end. It’s about something very different. The idea of playing The Ancient One is really just too tickling. I can’t say no to that!”

The Ancient One (her character) is actually a male character in the comic itself, so it’s nice to see some ladies getting into Marvel’s superhero films. Swinton actually played another male character in Constantine (movie adaptation), where she was the angel Gabriel.

Marvel have always seemed enthralled about Doctor Strange as a film, and having an actor of Tilda Swinton’s calibre join the film alongside Benedict is very exciting. It’s especially interesting considering there was also talk that Chiwetel Ejiofor may also be in the film.

This could very well end up being an extremely star-studded movie, with some insanely talented actors, but we imagine Doctor Strange will continue in Marvel’s vein of excellent superhero films. We’re excited about the direction Swinton mentioned, and look forward to finding out more about her role.

Scott Derrickson will be directing Doctor Strange, with Jon Spaihts penning the script. The film’s release date has been set for November 4, 2016.
