Doctor Strange 2 is officially on the hunt for a new director after Scott Derrickson drops out due to creative differences.

Bad news, Marvel fans. Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson has stepped down from the franchise sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

As Variety reports, Derrickson said in a statement that he is stepping away from the movie thanks to “creative differences,” but will remain onboard as an executive producer. According to both Derrickson and Marvel, the decision to part ways was a mutual one.

Marvel issued a statement about Derrickson leaving as well, “Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU.”

Shooting is set to begin for Multiverse of Madness in May, and while the film currently doesn’t have a director, there aren’t expected to be any production delays.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is slated for release on May 7, 2021. There is no word if Marvel has a shortlist of prospective directors, but it will certainly be no small feat finding another director who can balance the wild world of Doctor Strange.

As with any Marvel film, details for the plot of Multiverse of Madness are being kept under wraps. However, Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Stephen Strange, and Elizabeth Olsen is expected to appear as Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch.

And with Wanda Maximoff appearing in the film, it does stand to reason that the events in the 2020 Disney+ show, WandaVision will have something to do with this new Doctor Strange adventure. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait until the movie premieres in May of 2021 to know for sure what is in store for us.

Because Disney doesn’t anticipate any production delays, we expect that we’ll hear the announcement of a new director very soon. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as more news breaks on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
