Universal is bringing Doctor Dolittle back to the big screen, this time starring Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr.

The new movie is titled The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle and is “based on the character from the 1920’s series of children’s books by Hugh Lofting,” according to THR. “Stephen Gaghan (Syriana, Gold) will direct the film based on a script he wrote, with an earlier draft by Tom Shepherd.”

This is the third version of Doctor Dolittle made by Hollywood. The original arrived in 1967 starring Rex Harrison, but most of us remember the 1998 installment starring Eddie Murphy. The latter received a sequel in 2001.

RDJ has focused primarily on his role as Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes in recent years. As he slowly but surely steps out of the Marvel world, he’s lining up other big (potential franchise) projects!
