With less than 150 days until the Divergent movie premiere, many people are jumping on the bandwagon and reading the series that continuously gets hype.

However, when they find out that Theo James is going to be playing Four, many people become outraged. My only question: Why?

I admit, I’ve only been a fan of the series since March, right before Theo was announced as the beloved Four/Tobias, but I immediately knew that he was the right choice. Theo was on the show Golden Boy, which unfortunately was cancelled by CBS, but anyone can still find clips online, and the moment that he was announced, I went online and found a six minute long featurette, and I knew he was perfect.

At 28 years old, Theo isn’t new to acting, but before 2012, he was virtually unheard of. An English actor born in 1984, Theo was in indie films and guest-starred on some shows before he was cast in Underworld: Awakening, where he played David. This was his first big role, and then Golden Boy came along, and immediately after, Divergent. So, a little-known actor was cast for Four. So what?

All of the actors in the Harry Potter series were unknown when they were cast. True, they were younger than Theo is now, but the three stars are now some of the biggest in the world. It’s not bad to cast an unknown to play a major character in a well-known and well-loved series. Since Theo has almost no reputation preceding him, it will be much easier to watch him as Four without thinking of another character while we’re watching Divergent.

After watching Theo in Golden Boy, it was immediately easy for me to tell that he was going to be the perfect choice for one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. Four is supposed to be brave and stubborn, but at heart, he still has fears and he can still love. Just through watching a less than 10-minute clip of him in the show, I could tell that he embodied Four perfectly. It only makes sense to cast a brave actor to play a Dauntless leader, which is exactly what Lionsgate did.

Another concern that many fans have is that Theo is too old to be playing the 18-year-old Four. I admit, this was my biggest concern when I looked up Theo online for the first time. However, even at 28, the actor and musician doesn’t look older than 25.

This problem was fixed very easily. Shailene Woodley, the up-and-coming actress who plays Tris in Divergent, revealed in an interview that the studio had changed Four’s age in the story from 18 to 24 to fit Theo. Some people may still have concerns with this, and I can only ask: why? It isn’t vitally important to the story that Four is 18, so if he’s a few years older, what does it matter? Theo is still going to play the same Four that the fans of Divergent know and love, just with a little bit more maturity and experience.

I can understand that many people were and continue to be shocked when they learn that Theo was cast as Four, since many were expecting other actors such as Drew Roy or Jeremy Irvine to be cast instead. In my opinion, Theo really is the perfect choice to play Four. Theo embodies so easily every characteristic that Four was written to possess, and in the previews that have been released, though they’re short, it is plain to see that Theo is going to play the best Four that fans of Divergent could ask for.

Plus, Theo is super attractive.
