Divergent’s script, up until today (as far as we knew), was penned by Snow White and the Huntsman screenwriter Evan Daughtery.

With today’s announcement that Jai Courtney had signed on to the film to play Eric, we also learned of a second screenwriter.

Vanessa Taylor has been brought aboard the project to co-write Divergent. She is best known for co-writing nine episodes of Game of Thrones including episode two of the third season (airing April 7). She also penned the recent Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones film, Hope Springs.

In addition to writing, Taylor was a co-executive producer on Game of Thrones‘ second season.

The reason for bringing Taylor on is unclear at this time, but additional writers are common in film. For example, The Hunger Games and Catching Fire scripts each had more than one writer.

In November, Daughtery spoke extensively about bringing Roth’s story to life. He said the biggest challenge was Tris’ overall character arc. “It’s tricky because the book is a very packed read with a lot of big ideas. So, distilling that into a cool, faithful two-hour movie is challenging. Not only do you have to establish five factions, but you have to acknowledge that there’s a sixth entity, which is the divergent, and you also have the factionless. So there’s a world that really has to be built out for the big screen… the movie is going to do it a little more efficiently.”

Divergent will hit theaters March 21, 2014.
