The book to film adaptation of Divergent opened as expected over its first weekend in theaters, earning $56 million in the United States.

Projections over the past month had placed the opening between $50 million to $60 million in its first three days on the big screen.

Today we’re also learning about the people who saw Divergent. Only 50% of those who had read the book turned out to see the movie this weekend, which is a surprising statistic because The Hunger Games and Twilight welcomed around 75% of their respective book audiences when they first opened in theaters. What makes this even more surprising is that Veronica Roth’s three novels have stayed atop many bestseller lists over the past few months, as we got closer to the first film’s release.

In terms of gender split at the theater, 59% of Divergent’s audience was female while 41% was male.

The film also nabbed an ‘A’ CinemaScore from moviegoers, while those who are under 18 gave it an ‘A+.’ By comparison, this weekend’s Muppets Most Wanted received a ‘B’ from attendees.

As we told you earlier this weekend, Divergent made $4.9 million at the midnight box office Thursday evening into Friday, which indicated that the film was off to a strong start. Thanks to its success, Summit decided to greenlight the Divergent sequel Insurgent which is set to begin filming this May for a March 2015 release. Meanwhile, the studio has also slotted a March 2016 release for the finale Allegiant.

Those who’ve seen Divergent have been busy discussing their thoughts about the film in our open thread.
