Hypable sat down with several stars of the Divergent movie, including Miles Teller (who plays Peter), Zoe Kravitz (Christina), and other powerful Dauntless.

At the Hard Rock Hotel across the street from the convention center on Thursday, Teller and Kravitz were joined by Ben Lloyd-Hughes (Will), Christian Madsen (Al), and Amy Newbold (Molly) to speak about their first time ever at Comic-Con – both for Divergent and themselves.

As first timers, Teller had one way to describe the yearly pop culture mecca. He says it compares to a New York City subway: Packed, smelly, and hot.

What’s even hotter is anticipation for the Divergent panel this afternoon where the first-ever footage from the movie will be shared with fans (Hypable will be there – stay tuned!). The cast told us today’s first-look is about a minute of highlights including people jumping off trains and buildings like the Dauntless love to do. It will introduce people to the series whether or not they’ve heard of it before. We’ve confirmed with Summit that it will not be released online.

“That’s the point of this, to show Divergent to the fan base and explain what it’s about for people who haven’t read it and don’t know anything about it,” said Madsen.

Added Teller, “It’s probably showing a lot of the tone, it’s showing how Neil’s shooting it. It’s a really big movie, big budget.”

Everyone read the book before they started filming earlier this year, and the cast were in agreement that the adaptation from book to film is loyal thanks in part to author Veronica Roth’s close involvement.

Said Kravitz, who’s father is well known in the young adult literature world thanks to his role as Cinna in The Hunger Games, said, “We all read the book and then focused on the script. Because if you start getting nit picky comparing everything to the book, it’s kind of hard to work that way. The story’s the same. If [Roth’s] happy, we’re happy.”

Lloyd-Hughes is confident people will enjoy it. “I’d be surprised if people watched it and thought ‘What the f—!'”

Teller can understand the fan base’s deep connection to the trilogy. Preparing for the release of The Spectacular Now – a book to film adaptation of Tim Tharp’s book of the same name in which Teller stars – the actor says he was once let down by another adaptation.

“When I saw Indian in the Cupboard, I was so upset because it diverted from the book so much. I had fallen in love with the characters in the book,” he told us.

Newbold’s character Molly and Teller’s Peter both live past the second book Insurgent, which means they’ll be back to some degree in Allegiant this October. Newbold told us that, despite requests, Roth is keeping tight-lipped on the ending. “She won’t tell us anything. I tried to get something out of her at the wrap party and she wouldn’t say a thing.”

Filming on Divergent just finished last night, July 17. With the film now completed, we wanted to know what each of the cast members’ favorite scenes were. Nearly everyone was in agreement about the Dining Hall scene being a top moment.

“It was our first time doing a group scene together,” said Madsen. “There was so much energy, so many extras. We got to improv. That’s the whole thing about becoming Dauntless – they became this group of friends.”

Kravitz and Newbold also shared a laugh over their fight scene and found it to be one of their favorite parts of the film. Other top choices included running through the streets of Chicago while they were shut down for the production.

We also asked about favorite sets. Again, the Dining Hall featured as one of the cast’s picks. They were also impressed by the warehouse where training occurred. “We our fighting and training there and it sucked,” said Newbold. “It was cold and drafty, but it looks so good on screen, and I loved how we were so uncomfortable because it was a really nice initiation” into the dystopian world.

Another favorite was the Navy Pier which actually features in the book. It was Lloyd-Hughes’ favorite scenes because he remembers it so vividly from reading.

When asked if Theo James (Four) and Shailene Woodley (Tris) actually scaled the entire ferris wheel, the cast said yes.

“They scaled the whole thing,” said Teller. “Theo’s a psycho.”

It was at “psycho” that the publicist came in and told us our time to talk had ended, which left the cast members in fits of laughter. “Everyone loves a soundbite!” said Teller.

Divergent opens in theaters March 21, 2014.
