Though the book-to-film adaptation of Veronica Roth’s Divergent is still very much in the pre-production stages, there is some good news for readers who naturally hope the movie is as loyal to the book as possible.

Divergent will be filmed in Chicago, Illinois, which is where the book’s story is set.

The Chicago Sun-Times broke the news and reports that Governor Pat Quinn’s Illinois Film Office and the massive Chicago filming studio Cinespace, “worked hard” to woo Summit-Lionsgate, the studio adapting Divergent. The filmmakers reportedly “fell in love” with some of the locations in the city.

Chicago is no stranger to hosting big Hollywood film productions; Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy filmed in the city and acted as Gotham. The list goes on: Home Alone, The Blues Brothers, the original Ocean’s Eleven, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, High Fidelity, and Hoop Dreams all used the town. Divergent‘s futuristic Chicago setting makes choosing the Illinois location a no-brainer.

Shailene Woodley will star as lead character Tris. An actor to play Four has not yet been confirmed, but a source reported a month ago that filmmakers had narrowed the candidates down to four specific men.

Divergent screenwriter Evan Daughtery spoke of adapting Roth’s story for the big screen last month. He said the biggest challenge was tracking Tris from where she starts to where she ends. “It’s tricky because the book is a very packed read with a lot of big ideas. So, distilling that into a cool, faithful two-hour movie is challenging. Not only do you have to establish five factions, but you have to acknowledge that there’s a sixth entity, which is the divergent, and you also have the factionless. So there’s a world that really has to be built out for the big screen… the movie is going to do it a little more efficiently.”

Divergent opens March 21, 2014.
