It’s important for a book to film adaptation to be loyal to the source material, and Divergent director Neil Burger was adamant about select scenes absolutely being included.

The helmer reveals in a new interview that when he joined the project several scenes were on the chopping block. “I added quite a few things back from the script that was first presented to me,” he said. “I was like, ‘Where’s the zip-line? Where’s Christina being hung over the chasm?’ So we worked those back in, which the movie is stuffed full of events, but they’re events that we love from the book.”

He added an understandable statement: “Obviously a movie is a little bit different than a book and certain things will be changed and people will be like, ‘Where’s the…’ but mostly we have it in.”

Burger also spoke about why the book will work so well as a movie. “It has an incredible beginning, middle and end. There’s an incredible journey Tris takes, an incredible journey society goes through—how it falls apart and goes into war. It just works.”

We’re glad to see that he is so appreciative of the source material, and it sounds like he has a real grasp on why fans fell in love with the two stories.

Divergent will open in theaters March 21, 2014. Burger and several cast members alongside author Veronica Roth appeared at San Diego Comic-Con last week to discuss the film with fans and reveal the very first footage.

The third and final book in the Divergent trilogy titled Allegiant will hit store shelves this October.
