The first deleted scene to be released from Divergent is one that fans were really hoping to see in theaters: Edward losing his eye.

The scene had been cut from the Divergent movie for an unknown reason, but the clip was shot and will live on the DVD/Blu-ray, which hits store shelves on August 5.

Watch below as Tris (Shailene Woodley) sleeps peacefully until she hears Edward (Ben Lamb) scream repeatedly. When Tris and company go out to see what’s wrong, they discover Edward is in really bad shape and they’re not sure what to do with him. Viewers get to see the butter knife actually in his eye (gross!). Peter (Miles Teller) lurks over the scene at the very end, subtly telling viewers that he was the one who did it.

Why was this scene cut? It may’ve been to make Edward more likable, or it may’ve been to ensure that the film received a PG-13 rating instead of R from the MPAA. That shot of his eye is pretty gross.

Pre-order Divergent now! Other features with the set include director and producer commentary (two separate commentaries!) and a handful of featurettes.

If you just want to grab the movie without the special features, the film is available now on Digital HD.

Over the weekend Divergent stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James stopped by San Diego Comic-Con to sign posters for fans on the show floor. While there the duo also gave a couple of interviews and revealed that Tris will have a much shorter hair style for the film’s sequel Insurgent.

Do you like the Edward deleted scene? Should they have kept it in?

Thanks to Yahoo! for the clip.
