Divergent’s opening box office may be on par with the original Twilight, if the latest tracking numbers are to be believed.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Divergent is on course to open around $65 million, which is very close to Twilight’s $69.6 million back in November 2008. (Last week, a different report predicts a $50 million opening for Divergent).

Studios use tracking reports to learn about the public’s awareness of the film leading up to its release so they have an idea of how well (or not well) it’s going to do once it hits theaters.

Tracking reports say that Divergent is tracking behind Twilight in just one category: Unaided awareness, which THR says is “arguably one of the most important barometers.” However, it’s beating the vampire story with higher scores in total awareness, definite interest, first choice, younger females and male interest (the latter of which the Twilight franchise was always weak in).

Of course, Divergent is far from The Hunger Games’ box office which opened to over $150 million two years ago. That’s not a problem though, and Summit clearly has a popular new franchise on their hands.

You may remember that the Twilight sequel opened up to a staggering $142 million, one year after the original film, so naturally the studio must be hoping for similar growth in between Divergent and Insurgent. The sequel is already set for a March 2015 opening, and filming is expected to begin this spring.

Divergent opens in theaters Friday, March 21. The film stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet. It is based on the book of the same name by Veronica Roth, who penned a trilogy based in this dystopian world.

Thanks, THR.
