New remarks from Disney/Pixar creative chief John Lasseter offer exciting teases concerning Walt Disney Animation Studios’ upcoming film Moana.

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival this week, Lasseter offered new details about both Pixar and Walt Disney Animation’s upcoming slates. What he had to say about Moana was particularly interesting because he compared the new film to two Disney classics.

According to Variety, who was there to recap Lasseter’s remarks, “Disney’s first Polynesian princess movie is a musical in the tradition of The Little Mermaid or Pocahontas. It opens with a song number with Moana’s birth that brings to mind ‘The Circle of Life’ from The Lion King.”

Moana is set during an ancient time, and the leading lady sets off on an adventure after a major family event. “The story is set 2,000 years in the past, where 16-year-old Moana wants to set sail to explore nearby islands. After her grandmother’s death, she sneaks away in a boat (despite her father’s instructions not to do so), along with sidekicks in the form of a pig (Pua) and a rooster (Hei). When she gets stranded on an island, she meets mythical hero Maui (Dwayne Johnson), who wears tattoos that come to life and owns a magical sea hook.”

As previously announced, Moana is a musical. It’ll be Disney’s first animated musical since 2013’s runaway hit Frozen.

In case you don’t believe those Little Mermaid and Pocahontas claims mentioned above, consider this: Moana is helmed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the filmmaking duo behind The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog, and Aladdin.

Lasseter used the same Cannes event to share new information about the upcoming Pixar films The Good Dinosaur, Finding Dory, and Toy Story 4.

Moana opens in theaters November 23, 2016. We can’t wait to see a new adventure film from the Mouse House in the vein of their renaissance period slate!
