Disney Theatrical has confirmed that they are attempting to bring The Muppets to Broadway for a live-action stage show.

Initially uncovered by Variety, a test Muppets Broadway show was staged last month and ran for 15 minutes. The performance “incorporated a handful of sets and more than 85 Muppets,” according to the trade publication’s report. The main goal of the performance was logistics: Could The Muppets work in a theater setting where puppets need to be manipulated and seen by an entire theater?

No new material was performed during the test show, but old Muppets tunes – including Kermit’s “Rainbow Connection” were sung.

Disney Theatrical is not set on the project yet, but producer Thomas Schumacher said he was “very intrigued” by the test. Variety’s sources said the show went “well.”

The Muppets franchise was re-invigorated in 2011 thanks to a new, self-titled film starring your favorite puppets alongside live characters played by Jason Siegel and Amy Adams.

The Muppets sequel The Muppets… Again! stars Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey. It will hit theaters March 21, 2014.

We would love to see The Muppets hit Broadway. It would be a dream to finally see these characters live. Disney’s Theatrical arm will next bring Aladdin to Broadway beginning in early 2014. It is a highly-anticipated project and will begin test runs in Toronto, Canada this November for nine weeks.

Thanks, Variety.
