Are you excited for another King Arthur movie? Well, get ready, because Disney’s Sword in the Stone just set its director.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is in negotiations to direct the live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated Sword in the Stone.

Fresnadillo is best known for directing 28 Weeks Later — yes, the zombie movie — and will be joined by writer Bryan Cogman (Game of Thrones), with Brigham Taylor (The Jungle Book) producing. That might suggest that Disney is going with a darker tone than the original 1963 animated version.

Also of note is that this is not the only Arthur-centric tale that Disney has in the works. The Merlin Saga is also in production at the Mouse House, with Ridley Scott potentially attached to the project as director.

Sword in the Stone was the final animated movie released before Walt Disney’s death, and was nominated for an Academy Award, though it received mixed reviews. It followed the misadventures of Arthur and Merlin, as the latter readied Arthur for his role as king, and was based on T. H. White’s tetralogy, The Once and Future King.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the live-action adaptation will follow White’s novels a little more closely, and how Disney’s two Arthurian movies interact together.

There’s a minor concern that audiences might get confused with two similar movies being released by the same studio. But, with the wealth of King Arthur projects on the big screen already, perhaps Arthurian-fatigue might be on the table first.

Disney have several live-action remakes in production, with Mulan, Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King hitting screens over the next couple of years. No projected release date has been given for Sword in the Stone.
