Disney has removed the “Girls Costumes” and “Boys Costumes” sections from their online store so kids no longer have to feel pressured by the gender labels Disney assigns.

As first discovered by The Mary Sue, the Disney Store now labels all of their Halloween costumes simply “for kids”.

Browsing the Halloween 2015 costume catalogue at DisneyStore.com, you’ll now find costume names like “Mulan Costume Collection for Kids,” “Peter Pan Costume Collection for Kids,” and “Tinker Bell Costume Collection for Kids”.

What’s more, the “Boys” and “Girls” sections of the Disney Store now feature all of the costumes. For example, Jasmine and Cinderella appear in the Boys section:

Previously Disney assigned genders to each of the costumes. For example, the Minnie Mouse costume was called “Minnie Mouse Pink Costume Collection for Girls” (emphasis ours).

As you can see in the screenshot below, up until last year the store separated the costumes by gender. The sections were also assigned blue and pink themes to represent boys and girls respectively:

This year’s theme in the store? “I Am Awesome.” Yes you are, kid! Be who you want to be.

While the Disney Store still has “Boys” and “Girls” sections outside of their Halloween section, The Mary Sue notes that Avengers and Star Wars toys have started appearing in the girls sections.

In June Disney’s U.K. Store merged the Boys and Girls sections into one simple “Kids” section after receiving a letter from a young girl about the issue. We hope the U.S. store follows in their footsteps soon!

Disney’s decision comes after facing a few merchandise backlashes over the past year including Mark Ruffalo publicly asking Disney to create more Black Widow merchandise.

Thanks for doing the right thing, Disney!
