Disney is working on a live-action reimagining of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves that’ll star the princess’ sister, Rose Red.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Justin Merz and Evan Daugherty have come up with a story that works as a “companion piece” to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Disney’s very first animated movie.

“The story is a revisionist take that transposes Rose Red into the Snow White tale, making her a key player in the later moments of the classic story,” according to the report. “When Snow White takes a bite from the iconic poison apple and falls into her Sleeping Death, her estranged sister, Rose Red, must undertake a dangerous quest with Grumpy and the other dwarfs to find a way to break the curse and bring Snow White back to life.”

The original Brothers Grimm fairytale following Snow White and Rose Red has no relation to the Snow White tale from the Brothers Grimm that led Walt Disney to create his Seven Dwarves movie. The idea of merging the two stories came from Daugherty, who is no stranger to the fairytale: He wrote Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth for Universal.

This project is the latest in a long line of live-action projects Disney is reportedly developing which put new spins on animated classics. The next three live-action fairytales hitting theaters from the Mouse House: The Jungle Book in April, Alice Through the Looking Glass in May, Pete’s Dragon in August, and Beauty and the Beast next March.

Other characters reportedly in line to get live-action movies include Winnie the Pooh, Genie, Prince Charming, and Mulan.

A new Snow White movie starring her sister — who’s straight from the world of the Brothers Grimm — is certainly an intriguing premise. Disney’s done a good job of creating worthwhile live-action adaptations, so we’re cautiously optimistic about this one.
