The consumer products arm of Disney is responding to complaints concerning Merida’s new Disney Princess look.

Many who have seen the new look were shocked at the slimmer, sexier figure when compared to the one seen in Pixar’s Brave last summer. Merida was Pixar’s first female lead character, and she was applauded for her “I don’t need to be a princess” attitude, which set a good example for children. The pretty princess appearance contradicted her character and even caused the co-director of Brave to speak out in protest.

Today, Disney responded to a couple of sources about the matter. They told Deadline that the new look will only be used for a limited number of products this fall. The design was primarily created to promote the coronation ceremony for the princess held at Disney World last week.

In a separate statement to Inside the Magic, Disney said that the look was created because Merida was “dressing up” for her coronation.

Disney says that the permanent look will be “much tamer” than the one currently seen across the internet. The studio has yet to reveal this tamer design, but we’re sure all eyes will be waiting for it.

Merida is the 11th Disney Princess and can be found in the Pixar film Brave, which opened in theaters last summer.

Thanks, Deadline.
