A Beauty and the Beast prequel series is officially on the way over at Disney+.

Fans of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast who’ve ever found themselves wondering how Gaston and LeFou became the tight-knit duo that Belle first introduces us to are about to have that question answered.

On Tuesday (June 15), Disney+ announced that they’ve given the green light to an all new Beauty and the Beast prequel series that’ll explore the two antagonists’ lives prior to the events of the animated movie.

Actors Josh Gad and Luke Evans are officially on board to reprise their roles as LeFou (whose real name is Louie) and Gaston, respectively for the limited musical series. Also set to join them is newcomer Briana Middleton, who will take on the role of LeFou’s stepsister, Tilly.

After a surprising revelation from Tilly’s past comes to light, Tilly, LeFou, and Gaston find themselves setting off on an unexpected journey filled with romance, comedy, and adventure. While the mysteries of the past are uncovered and dangers of the present grow, old friends and new enemies reveal that this familiar kingdom harbors many secrets.

In a statement announcing the Beauty and the Beast prequel series, Disney exec Gary Marsh offered a bit more insight into what fans can expect from the limited series musical.

“For anyone who’s ever wondered how a brute like Gaston and a goof like LeFou could have ever become friends and partners, or how a mystical enchantress came to cast that fateful spell on the prince-turned-beast, this series will finally provide those answers…and provoke a whole new set of questions,” said Marsh.

Behind the camera, Josh Gad himself teamed up with Once Upon a Time creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz to write and executive produce the series. The trio will also split show running duties.

Others involved with he production include Tony nominee Leisel Tommy, who will serve as executive producer and director of the first episode. In addition, the series will feature an original soundtrack from Alan Menken. Tangled vet Glenn Slater will provide lyrics for the first episode of the series.

Currently, there’s no word on when we might expect to see the limited series debut via Disney+, but production on the Beauty and the Beast prequel series is set to kick off in spring 2022.
