Update (3/5/2021): According to Deadline, Ronny Chieng (who most might know for his work as a correspondent on The Daily Show) has signed on to join the cast of the upcoming Doogie Howser reboot at Disney+.

Chieng has boarded the series (officially titled Doogie Kamealoha, MD) in a recurring guest starring spot, which will find him taking on the role of one of the hospital employees.

Specifically, Chieng will be playing the role of a heart surgeon who will take it upon himself to put Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha through the paces.

Original Story (1/14/2021):

The Doogie Howser reboot at Disney+ has found its star in Andi Mack vet Peyton Elizabeth Lee.

According to Variety, actress Peyton Elizabeth Lee has scored the lead role in the upcoming Doogie Howser reboot coming down the pipeline at Disney+.

Word of the reboot first hit the internet back in September 2020 when it was announced that the streamer was not only looking to bring the show back, but also to reimagine it with a female lead.

Titled Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., the medical sitcom is set in Hawaii and follows a mixed race 16-year-old girl named Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha. In addition to working her way through the trials and tribulations of adolescence, she’ll also find herself trying to balance life as a teenager with her budding medical career.

Lahela’s Irish mother also happens to be her supervisor at the hospital. Meanwhile, the series also plans to tackle the way her Hawaiian father grapples with accepting the fact that his daughter is growing up.

Lee, who will portray Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha on the show, is no stranger to the Disney family.

Previously, the young actress starred as the titular character in the critically acclaimed Disney Channel original series, Andi Mack. The series, which made headlines for tackling important storylines such as sexual identity and gun safety, came to a close after three seasons in 2019.

Behind the camera, the Doogie Howser reboot will be written and executive produced by Kourtney Kang with Jake Kasdan on board to direct the first episode. Kasdan will also serve as an executive producer on the series along with Melvin Mar, and Danya and Jesse Bocho.

Currently, there’s no word with regards to when we can expect to see the Doogie Howser reboot debut via Disney+.
