A whole new Pirates of the Caribbean could be heading to theaters.

According to Deadline, Disney is looking into rebooting their cash cow franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean.

As crazy as the idea sounds, it seems as though Disney is taking reboot talks incredibly seriously. The studio has reportedly already met with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to discuss the project.

The reboot could find Reese and Wernick (whose most recent credits include penning Deadpool and its sequel) teaming with Jerry Bruckheimer, who would return to produce on the proposed reboot.

Other than Bruckheimer, there’s currently no word on whether any other original cast or crew members would return.

Disney has released a total of five films under the Pirates banner, all of which have starred Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.

If Disney moves forward with giving the reboot the green light, it’ll be interesting to see whether they chose to play it safe and continue putting Jack Sparrow at the forefront of the franchise, or if they decide to revamp the series completely to focus on an entirely new swashbuckling antihero.

News of a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot may fall fully under the banner of “things we don’t need,” but it’s not surprising to hear that Disney is looking to keep cashing in on the franchise.

While the fifth and latest installment of the series made about $64 million less than its predecessor, Dead Men Tell No Tales still ruled the Memorial Day box office, raking in $62 million during its three-day opening weekend in 2017.

In addition, the franchise has pulled in over $4.5 billion since the first installment debuted in July of 2003.

Though the numbers show there’s clearly still an interest in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, we’ll be curious to find out whether Disney can keep the momentum up if and when their reboot gets the green light.
