Looks like Disney is officially moving forward with plans to reboot their Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Rebooting a hit franchise whose last film came out a mere two years ago seems like a bit of a gamble, but Disney is clearly hoping the bet pays when it comes to the cash cow that is the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

According to Deadline, plans to reboot the Johnny Depp-led franchise are gaining steam over at Disney.

In fact, the studio has enlisted the help of Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin to get the reboot up and running. Mazin will be working alongside Ted Elliott (co-writer of Pirates of the Caribbean 1 through 4) to work on the story for the proposed reboot.

Plans for a Pirates reboot first hit the internet just last year around this time. Back then, it was revealed that Disney had already reportedly met with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to discuss the project.

At the time, the plan was for Reese and Wernick (whose most recent film credits include penning Deadpool and its sequel) to team up with Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer to work on the proposed reboot.

Reese and Wernick eventually ended up pulling out of the project earlier this year.

As for Bruckheimer, the producer is still expected to return to help the next installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise set sail.

Disney’s first installment of the Pirates franchise premiered in theaters back in July of 2003. Since then, the studio has churned out five Pirates of the Caribbean movies in total. Collectively, the franchise has pulled in over $4.5 billion at the box office.

With numbers like that, it’s no surprise that Disney is looking for ways to continue the swashbuckling adventure. Even so, it’ll be interesting to see if fans of the original saga will come aboard for the next iteration.
