Everyone’s favorite demigod, Hercules, is officially getting the live-action treatment over at Disney!

According to Variety, Disney is currently in the early stages of developing a live action adaptation of their 1997 animated hit, Hercules.

Word of a live-action adaptation is pretty big news all on its own, but to add to the excitement, the project already has some huge names attached behind the scenes.

Specifically, Disney will be teaming with Avengers vets Joe and Anthony Russo to bring everyone’s favorite demigod back to the big screen. The Russos will serve as producers on the project via their AGBO production company banner.

In addition, the studio has also tapped Dave Callaham to pen the script for their live-action adaptation. Interestingly, Hercules isn’t the only Disney project Callaham is currently working on. Over on the Marvel side of things, the screenwriter is also writing the script for Shang-Li and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Callaham’s other writing credits include The Expendables, Godzilla, Zombieland: Double Tap, and the forthcoming Wonder Woman: 1984. It’s safe to say he’s something of an old hand when it comes to working on action-fueled films, so it seems as though he’ll be a great fit for Hercules.

As Disney fans know all too well, the 1997 animated feature was a musical retelling of the Greek legend. The beloved instant classic features a slew of incredibly memorable songs including “Go The Distance,” “I Won’t Say I’m In Love,” and “Zero To Hero,” to name a few.

Currently, there’s no word with regards to whether the live-action adaptation will go the Beauty and the Beast route and feature all the songs the original did, or if they’ll forgo those in favor of bringing moviegoers something more along the lines of the upcoming live-action Mulan.

That being said, we’re sure Disney fans far and wide will be crossing their fingers for a full-fledged live-action adaptation that features all of the songs they know and love.

And of course, we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears peeled for casting news surrounding Disney’s latest live-action endeavor, now that we know it’s coming down the pipeline!
