Disney’s 1992 animated classic Aladdin is going to receive a live-action prequel starring everyone’s favorite character, Genie.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Disney has hired Damian Shannon and Mark Swift to write a live-action movie in the world of Aladdin but starring the big blue wish granter. The story will take place prior to the events of the animated movie we all fell in love with in the ’90s.

“The new project would focus on the realm of the Genies and tell how that one Genie ended up enslaved in the lamp,” writes THR. “Although Genie is just in the early stages, the long-term plan is to have the project lead into an Aladdin live-action movie.”

No other information is known at this time, and the movie currently is without a release date. The report cautions that the project is still in the “early stages,” so we may be waiting a while to see this one hit the big screen.

For reference: Genie’s screenwriters are currently working on a Baywatch movie as well as a film called O’Lucky Day starring Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage.

We like this prequel idea because Genie is one of the most beloved characters in the history of Disney animated film slate. The character was voiced by the late Robin Williams in the animated Aladdin, and the actor’s work is one of the biggest reasons why the movie went on to be a huge success. It is one of several films released by Walt Disney Animation Studios in the ’90s during their renaissance era.

Did you have Aladdin on your Disney animated-to-live-action bingo card? Don’t forget to scratch this one off (even though this new film is technically about the Genie, but we’ll let it slide)!

Disney has been working hard to come up with ideas for live-action films based on animated classics in recent months. After successes like Cinderella, Maleficent, and the inevitable success that is 2017’s Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson, we’ve learned that the studio is working on adaptations of many animated movies. Recent additions to the live-action-development slate include Dumbo, Winnie the Pooh, Tinker Bell and even Prince Charming. There are sequels to these live-actions too, like one for Maleficent and another for Alice in Wonderland.

A Genie prequel: Does it feel like a wish has been granted?

We’re wondering if Disney is planning on going with a live actor for the Genie (which they’ve pulled off successfully for the Broadway version of the story), or if Genie will be CGI. Either way, the actor who voices him will have very big shoes to fill after Williams’ legendary performance.
