Disney is leaning in heavily to live-action adaptations of their classic cartoons, most recently in the new trailer for the live-action Dumbo.

Tim Burton and Disney are teaming up to bring us all a live-action version of the classic cartoon Dumbo. While the movie is one of the most hotly debated among classic Disney fans due to a surprisingly dark storyline for a kids’ cartoon paired with racist characters in the original animated version, the movie is still considered a classic piece of Disney animation.

The darker story is certainly right up Burton’s alley, and so fans of his are likely far more prepared for a more bleak, intense story than Disney fans were back when Dumbo first premiered in the forties. Additionally, the racist crow characters will not be showing up in this adaptation of Dumbo, so this movie is shaping up to be a huge improvement on the original.

In the full Dumbo trailer just released by Disney, we get a taste of what’s in store in the live-action Dumbo. Though the movie most certainly touches on very heavy subjects like animal cruelty, family separation, and the aftermath of war, the trailer is also well balanced with a hearty serving of fun and magic.

Dumbo tells the story of a struggling circus owner, Max Medici (Danny DeVito) who enlists a former circus star, Holt (Colin Farrel), and his family to care for an elephant born with extremely large ears struggling to perform in Medici’s already-struggling circus. However, when it is discovered that the elephant can fly, Medici’s circus catches the attention of the masses, including the nefarious Dreamland circus owner, V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton). When Vandevere buys out Medici’s circus, Holt, his family, and Dumbo are whisked away to Dreamland, into a whole new world of circus performing life that isn’t always as fantastic and glamorous as it seems.

While Dumbo might be a darker story, we love that the trailer still makes the movie feel magical while also shining an important light on the heavier subjects discussed in the film. We can’t wait to see Tim Burton’s take on this movie.

Dumbo will fly into theaters on March 29, 2019.
