Disney’s live action Cinderella just gained another big name in Helena Bonham Carter, who will play the Fairy Godmother.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news and revealed that the Fairy Godmother will have an alternate storyline than what’s in the classic fairytale you already know and love. “The fairy godmother will be getting more screen time in this version,” they write, “with the character disguised as an old beggar who watches over Cinderella before revealing herself as the magical being she truly is.”

News of Bonham Carter joining the project was confirmed by Disney moments later via e-mail.

It’s not hard to imagine Bonham Carter as a disheveled character. Her most recent role in Les Miserables saw the actress play Madame Thénardier, who is a broke woman stealing from others.

She’s also no stranger to Disney or fairytales, having appeared in Alice in Wonderland as the Red Queen. She will next appear in Disney’s The Lone Ranger, which hits theaters in July. To young adults, she’s best known for her role as Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter movies.

Numerous casting decisions for Disney’s Cinderella have been announced in recent weeks. Downton Abbey‘s Lily James will play Cinderella and Game of ThronesRichard Madden will play Prince Charming. Another Downton actress, Sophie McShera, may play one of the wicked step sisters.

Cinderella will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and hopes to shoot later this year for a 2014 release.

Thanks, THR.
