Disney Channel has announced that High School Musical 4 is happening, and casting is now underway.

The fourth installment in the High School Musical series — which will be on television, not in theaters — will be directed and choreographed by Jeffrey Hornaday (Teen Beach Movie, Teen Beach Movie 2).

According to a press release, High School Musical 4 will “continue the story of the global sensation ‘High School Musical’ — and introduce new East High Wildcats and their cross-town school rivals, the West High Knights.”

At this time we do not know which original cast members, if any, are returning. If any do (Zac! Come back!), chances are they’ll be in cameo or supporting positions. Disney’s “nationwide casting search” suggests they’ll be looking for new leads to fill enormous shoes.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said in a statement, “High School Musical is part of Disney Channel’s DNA. It embodies all that we stand for. As a way of continuing to embrace that heritage, we’re excited to announce ‘the start of something new’ — as we launch a search for a new class of East High Wildcats to star in a fourth installment of the ‘High School Musical’ franchise.”

High School Musical 4 will be penned by Dan Berendsen (who wrote Hannah Montana: The Movie, Teen Beach 2, and Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie) and Peter Barsocchini (who wrote all three High School Musicals).

High School Musical 3 found the lead characters played by Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu, and Monique Coleman graduating from high school. It was the first film in the series to open in theaters following the wild(cat) success of the first two installments.

Time to listen to HSM3’s soundtrack again!
