An extended look at the upcoming Kenny Ortega-directed Descendants has arrived, and it offers lots of new footage from the new Disney Channel Original Movie.

In case you haven’t heard of this film yet: The Descendants stars the children of the classic Disney heroes and villains as they start school with one another. The prince named Ben — the child of Belle and the Beast — offers the baddies a chance at redemption by letting them enroll at Auradon Prep (made up of good guys until now), because he believes the villain’s kids need a shot at becoming good. After all, they’ve been stuck with their bad parents all of their life!

Even though the Prince is trying to make peace between the good heroes and the bad, Maleficent (played by Kristin Chenoweth) can’t resist trying to take advantage of the opportunity by asking her daughter Mal to steal a wand which’ll help her control everyone.

The new Descendants trailer offers lots of new footage mixed in with scenes we saw in the first trailer. It still looks… shall we say… questionable, but the premise is pretty interesting: Can the children of the villains rid themselves of their bad image? The Prince believes in them, and Mal seems to think they can be good people too.

Also this week we’ve learned exactly when the new Disney Channel Original Movie will be premiering: July 31, 2015. Round up your DCOM-loving friends and start planning your viewing parties now!

How do you think ‘The Descendants’ looks?

The synopsis for the movie reads, “The story, set in the idyllic kingdom of Auradon, playfully presents the unexpected possibilities of what happens after the ‘happily ever after.’ As it unfolds, Ben, the benevolent teenage son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Beauty and the Beast), is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation is to offer a chance at redemption to Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jay, the trouble-making offspring of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella de Vil and Jafar, who have all been sequestered on the forbidden Isle of the Lost for 20 years. These villainous descendants are allowed into Auradon for the first time to attend prep school alongside the teenage progeny of Fairy Godmother, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Mulan. Only time will tell if these evil teens follow in the footsteps of their wicked parents.

“As these sons and daughters of evil meet the children of goodness, their story incorporates empowering themes about self-confidence, finding the beauty within, freedom of choice, personal responsibility, teamwork, justice and empathy.”
