There may soon be a new princess joining the Disney royal family.

According to Deadline, Disney has acquired a film pitch for live-action fairytale that centers on an African Princess.

Titled Sadé, the film is baed off of an original idea by Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed, and currently has two attached producers in Dope helmer Rick Famuyiwa and Scott Falconer.

Sadé tells the tale of a young African girl of the same name who suddenly finds the kingdom she calls home threatened by a mysterious evil force. Armed with newly discovered magical warrior powers, Sadé sets off on an adventure of self-discovery that’ll eventually help her save her kingdom and its people.

Of course, every good princess needs a sidekick and Sadé will have hers in the form of the kingdom’s prince, who sets off on the journey with her to lend a helping hand.

Though there’s currently no director attached to the project, Disney has tapped Shokunbi and Palmer to co-write the screenplay.

Additionally, there’s no telling when we might see Sadé come to life on the big screen. That being said, news of the acquisition is definitely cause for excitement.

As Disney fans know, the company introduced the world to its first official Black princess back in 2009 with the release of The Princess and the Frog.

Princess Tiana may have been the first, but the thing that’ll set Sadé apart is that it would mark the first time Disney would be bringing a Black princess to the big screen at the forefront of an original story, and not as part of a twist on a pre-existing classic fairytale.

We’ll definitely be keeping our ears peeled for more news surrounding the project now that we know of its existence!
