In completely shocking and tragic news, famed director Tony Scott, who has helmed films ranging from Top Gun to Unstoppable, has died after jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge this afternoon.

It’s at moments like these when it all gets put into perspective, with news the likes of which you never want to read or report about. A true talent, one who has made a major mark on cinema the past three decades, has left us. The Daily Breeze reports that Scott lept from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles around 12:30 this afternoon “without hesitation.” The U.S. Coast Guard has also reported that a suicide note was found in Scott’s Toyota Prius, parked on the eastbound lane of the bridge.

Tony Scott, who has teamed up with brother Ridley Scott on numerous occasions, leaves behind a tremendous body of work. 26 films spanning the past three decades, and countless producing titles through the Scott Free production company. Hypable would like to send our thoughts to those Scott leaves behind, his wife Donna and sons Max and Frank. He was 68.

UPDATE: ABC News has confirmed that Scott had inoperable brain cancer.

UPDATE 2: TMZ reports that ABC News’ report is inaccurate and Scott did NOT have brain cancer. What’s more, Scott did not have any “severe” medical conditions that would cause him to take his own life.
