The success of the first film has evidently led to the pre-production of Detective Pikachu 2 under Legendary Entertainment.

Detective Pikachu 2 will star the same titular talking Pokémon as the first, according to a report by ComicBook.com, who claims to have multiple sources close to the production that have confirmed the sequel’s existence.

Detective Pikachu 2 will be followed by other live-action Pokémon films, reports ComicBook. Those films could delve into the stories of many of the other Pokémon of Ryme City, and beyond.

While there is no official confirmation from The Pokémon Company or Legendary Entertainment about the film’s existence, the critical and commercial success of the first film may very well lead to the sequel’s announcement.

Detective Pikachu stars Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds as the titular yellow Pokémon, as he helps orphan Tim Goodman (Justice Smith, Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom) in the boy’s quest to solve the mystery of his father’s disappearance.

The live-action film is based on a 2016 Nintendo 3DS title of the same name, with both stories featuring a pretty rare event in the Pokémon universe: a talking Pokémon. Detective Pikachu is witty, sassy, loves coffee, and is always driven to finish a lead to the very end.

Detective Pikachu is an action-packed film full of cameos by many fan-favorite Pokémon, including creatures from all seven generations of the Pokémon series. While the film was more tailored toward fans of the original 151 Pokémon, ‘mons such as Morelull and Pancham from the later generations of the series were featured as well.

In Detective Pikachu 2, the series could open up its universe all the more by including different Pokémon from generations two through seven, giving long-time fans of the monster capturing series a reason to tune into a second live-action Pokémon adventure.

Detective Pikachu received a worldwide theatrical release on May 10, 2019.
