Demi Lovato has been quite honest with her fans about the struggles she had in the past, but on March 14 she was able to celebrate being 6 years sober.

It’s not uncommon to hear that someone has struggled with drug or alcohol abuse or an eating disorder, and sadly those struggles seem even more common in Hollywood. And while some celebrities are understandably private about dealing with addiction, Demi Lovato has been shockingly honest in her fight to be well and stay healthy. Her honesty and transparency have proven to be extremely helpful to others going through similar struggles, and just recently she got to share a big win with her fans: 6 years sober.

The singer took to Twitter to commemorate the occasion, and fans were so excited to see Lovato celebrate such a huge achievement.

Lovato’s personal life became very public when she announced she was going into rehab. She admitted to drug and alcohol abuse, an eating disorder, and struggling with self-harm. Of course, going to rehab is only part of the battle. Staying sober is another huge fight, and Lovato chronicled her recovery and her work to stay sober in the midst of a successful music career in the documentary Simply Complicated.

It was an incredibly brave thing for Lovato to do, letting her fans and the entire world into one of the most vulnerable areas of her life. As she told People, her manager encouraged her to be open about recovery to help others dealing with similar problems.

To Lovato, the opportunity to help her fans was more important than her privacy, saying “I think it’s more important that people learn from my struggles than to keep it to myself.” We’re so thankful Lovato was so brave and used her own pain to help others, and we’re even more excited that we can celebrate with her now.
